Two-third of the depressed people are unable to get proper treatment. If diagnosed properly, depression can be treated and the patient can fully recover.

Although depression can affect anybody,it’s effects vary depending upon a person’s gender and age. 16% of Americans are bound to have depression during their lifetime.

MEN

Although chances for depression are lower in men,but it is likely to go undiagnosed in them. They are likely to show symptoms associated with depression,but they tend to mask their conditions through drug use or intake of alcohol. Men suffering from depression are four times more likely to commit as compared to women.

WOMEN

Women are twice as likely to become depressed as men. Women are at a higher risk due to hormonal changes resulting because of puberty,menstruation,pregnancy,menopause etc.

ELDERLY

Older people are more likely to live alone,get ill , thoughts about getting old, losing vitality etc. These factors are common causes for depression in elderly

Given below are the common symptoms of depression. The thumb rule says that if you experience four or more of the symptoms nearly everyday for over a period of two weeks then you should seek medical help

●    Loss of energy and  tiredness

Depression refers to feelings of low mood which can affect anybody from time to time. Depression is not just feeling sad or upset; it is a form of illness which results in intense feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, sadness which is accompanied by other effects such as loss of energy, physical aches and pain, sleeplessness etc.

When people are having these kinds of feelings for a long time they don’t tend to realize that they are suffering from depression.

HOW THE BRAIN IS AFFECTED BY DEPRESSION

Depression is caused by chemical changes in the body that affect the functioning of the brain. Brain is a messaging system that controls every function of the body including our emotions. Our brain is made up of billions of nerve cells called neurons that send and receive messages from the rest of the body with the aid of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals affect our emotional state. When these chemical messages are not delivered properly between the brain cells it results in depression.
